Coins and Coin Jewelry

Throughout history, coin jewelry has been used to indicate wealth and good fortune. Historic Armenia was no exception: an array of beautiful jewelry comprising coins, including necklaces and bracelets, were common adornments. Not only was coin jewelry popular at the time, it also served an important historical purpose, and was used in genocide times as ways of ensuring lost family members, particularly children, could still fend and provide for themselves.

An authentic Armenian gold coin, left over from before Ottoman invasion. Some estimates place these coins at over 800 years old. Many of the coins depicted throughout this collection are Ottoman coins, from much later periods. Still, depiction of an authentic Armenian gold coin is fascinating, and pertinent to memory.
